Subscribe to a Mailing List

Note: List owners are not automatically subscribed to their own mailing lists. You may subscribe yourself to your lists at University of Chicago Mailing Lists. See Add a Subscriber Manually for instructions.

I have a CNetID

A list owner may subscribe you to a mailing list, but you can also ask to be subscribed to mailing lists at University of Chicago Mailing Lists. To submit your request to subscribe to a mailing list:

  1. Select the mailing list from the Index of Lists page.
  2. Click Subscribe in the left navigation bar.
  3. Click OK in the confirmation dialog box to confirm that you want to subscribe.
  4. Once the list owner grants approval for your subscription (if required), email sent to the mailing list will be delivered to your email inbox.

I do not have a CNetID

A non-CNetID email address may subscribe to public lists. A list owner may subscribe you, or you can ask to be subscribed to a mailing list at University of Chicago Mailing Lists. To submit your request to subscribe to a mailing list:

  1. Select the mailing list from the Index of Lists page.
  2. Click Subscribe in the left navigation bar.
  3. Click OK in the confirmation dialog box to confirm that you want to subscribe.
  4. Once the list owner grants approval for your subscription (if required), email sent to the mailing list will be delivered to your email inbox.

After you subscribe to a mailing list, you will be required to enter a system-generated password. If someone else subscribes you to a mailing list, you will need the system-generated password to log in to the Mailing Lists website. Unsubscribe from a Mailing List

There are two ways to cancel a mailing list subscription.

Unsubscribe Using the University of Chicago Mailing Lists Website

  1. Log in to the Mailing Lists website using the email address you would like unsubscribed from a mailing list.
    Many users have multiple email addresses so keeping track can get tedious. Look at the To: header in a recent email sent to you from the mailing list to determine which address is subscribed.
  2. Select the mailing list on the left navigation bar.
  3. Click Unsubscribe.
  4. Click Yes on the confirmation page to confirm subscription cancellation.

I do not have a CNetID

Users without a University of Chicago CNetID who are subscribed to a list must also log in to unsubscribe themselves. If you forgot your password then you can click Lost password? to have it emailed to you.

Note: Your department may require you to subscribe to certain internal mailing lists, so the list owner may reject your attempt to unsubscribe.

Unsubscribe Via Email

  1. Send an email to [list name]-unsubscribe@lists.uchicago.edu
  2. The email you send must be from an email address currently subscribed to the list.
  3. Include the word "UNSUBSCRIBE" in the body of the message.

Can I add an auto-response or vacation message to my mailing list?

Mailing Lists does not offer this feature.


View My Mailing List Subscriptions

To see a list of your email list memberships, log in to University of Chicago Mailing Lists. Your mailing lists will appear on the page's left navigation bar.

How can I see all the lists I'm subscribed to and all the lists I'm the administrator for?

When you log in to the Mailing Lists website, all the mailing lists you subscribe to, own, or moderate appear in the My Lists section in the navigation bar. The lists you own or moderate have an Admin button next to the name.

  • Click the list name to see subscribers' options for that list.
  • Click the Admin button to see administrator options for that list.
  • Return to the main page and your lists at any time by clicking the Home tab at the top.

Why can't I see lists that I own or am subscribed to on the Mailing Lists website?

If you cannot see mailing lists that you own, moderate, or subscribe to, you probably used an email address other than [your cnetid]@uchicago.edu.

We recommend you use your CNetID email address ([your cnetid]@uchicago.edu) for all your mailing lists. If you subscribed with another email address, we recommend you change the subscribing address to your CNetID email address.


Modify My Mailing List Subscription Settings

To change your subscriber options:

  1. Log in to University of Chicago Mailing Lists. Your mailing lists will appear on the page's left navigation bar.
  2. Select an email list from the left navigation bar, then click Subscriber Options.
  3. Choose the options you prefer. See Subscriber Settings Definitions to understand what the different options mean.
  4. Click [something].

Subscriber Settings Definitions

Receiving mode: This field determines how you receive messages sent to a list. See Definitions of Sending/Receiving Settings to understand how the options work.

Visibility: This field determines who can see your personal information on the through the mailing lists site.
ConcealedOnly the list owners can see your information on the subscriber review page. With this option selected, you will not appear on the page for other subscribers. Similarly, if the list owner selects this option, only list co-owners will be able to view your information on the review page.
Listed in the list review pageAnyone who can access the subscriber review page can see your information.
