IT Services recently rolled out updates and design changes to grouper.uchicago.edu. These changes were made in an attempt to make the site more user friendly. It is important to understand some of the basic functionality associated with using this site following these upgrades. One of the things that may be helpful for users to understand is how to import members into a group.

There may come a time, when you are using grouper, that you have to move all members of one group to another group for various reasons. This is where this tool comes in handy. Instead of manually having to add every member to a different group, you can import everyone into a group at once.

To begin, you must first either search for the group that you wish to import members into or find it in your favorites list.

From here, you should go to the More Actions drop-down and select Import Members.

On this page, you will see the unique path of the group that you are about to add members to. If you get to this page and realize that you have made a mistake, you can use the search functionality to find the correct group.

There are three different ways to import members. The first option is to copy and paste a list of member IDs in the area below. The next option is to import a file, which must include individual entity IDs for every person.

The final is to search for members of an existing group that is already in the system. Searching for, and selecting, a preexisting Grouper group will mean that all members of that group will be imported into this one. You will see that the full name of the group appears in the Member ID area.

Once you have finished the selection process, you can click the Add Members button at the bottom of the page and should now be able to locate the newly imported members in your group.

It is important to know that, if you wish to remove one of the imported people in the future, you must make him/her a direct member of the group. You will see that everyone that has been imported is an indirect member, so you must edit their privileges to make them direct members who can be modified or removed from your group in the future.
