Preferred Name [1:23]
The Directory Office recently put a feature in place that no longer allows a student without a full time staff affiliation to be updated using self-edit.
If your name appears incorrectly in the directory displaying something like John Smith Smith, you will be able to fix this using the MyUChicago portal.
After logging in to my.uchicago.edu using your CNetID and password, you should select My Information on the Home tab. Now, you should select Edit next to Preferred Name.
Here you can enter any nickname you wish making sure to only include changes to your first name.
For example, your name is Jonathan Smith, and you wish for your name to appear as John Smith. You should only type your first name, not your full name. Your last name will already appear, so including your last name as part of your Preferred Name results in the submission John Smith Smith in the directory. Anyone wishing to search for you in the directory will be able to find you under both submissions, Jonathan Smith or John Smith.
Please note that your Preferred Name of choice will appear on several applications and must be appropriate for everyone who uses any of the various sites.
This change will not be instantaneous. You may have to wait up to a week.
Contact the Directory Office at firstname.lastname@example.org with questions about this feature. Also, if you experience any technical difficulties with this video or have an accessibility related request, please send us a message.
