This video explains when it is best to log in to the Directory.

There are many things that a person would look up in the Directory that do not require logging in with a CNetID. However, there are also many additional features that you can only access to once you are logged in.
If you do not log in and look up people, you will be able to see the following things:
- affiliations with the university
- job title
- the department (or departments) that they currently members of
- their email address
- their phone number
- their fax number
- the address of the buildings they work in
- their faculty exchange number
For many, that is all that they are hoping to see. But if you were to log in using your CNetID and password, then you would have access to several other things. Proving you are actively affiliated with the University of Chicago buys you the chance to also see a person’s CNetID as well as, in some cases, his or her picture.
Please note that your ability to see someone’s picture is up to that specific individual. Using the self -edit functionality, a person has the capability to decide who can see their picture on the directory. They can choose from ‘Public’, ‘Staff and Faculty’, and ‘Nobody’. Please do not assume that something is wrong with the directory just because you may not be able to see a person’s picture even after you have logged in. This just means that the person you are looking up does not allow others photo access.
Logging in to the Online Directory also has perks when you are looking up a department or a sub-department. If you choose not to log in and search for a department or sub-department, all that you will see is links to the organization’s website as well as an email to contact if you have problems or questions to discuss with them. You will also see the division as well as either the department or sub department associated with that group depending on what you are looking for. However if you log in, you will have the ability to view a complete list of all of the people that are listed within that organization along with their primary job title, email, and phone number, which, in some cases, allows you to bypass a step when using the directory.
Finally, logging in will allow you to download up-to-date PDF listings of the Individual directory listings, the University Departments list, and the University Medical Center Departments list.
