SharePoint 2010 - Why does it take so long to connect my mapped drive to SharePoint?

This article describes a configuration change to speed up connecting a mapped drive to a SharePoint site.

The following article assumes you have a drive mapped to a SharePoint site. See Mapping a Drive to a SharePoint Site.

In Windows Explorer, if it takes more than a few seconds for your mapped drive to connect to your SharePoint you may need to configure connection settings in Internet Explorer. Even if you don't use Internet Explorer, adjusting this setting may help speed up connecting a mapped drive to SharePoint.

  1. In Internet Explorer, from the Tools menu, select Internet options
  2. On the Connections tab, click LAN settings.
  3. Under Automatic configuration, clear the checkbox next to Automatically detect settings.

Note: Issues with slow performance may not be limited to mapping the drive, but may also occur when making a WebDAV connection, moving or copying files, or publishing a file directly to a document library (e.g., one from Excel).
