xMail - Configure Apple Mail for xMail (Mac)

This article explains how to configure the Apple Mail email client using xMail on Mac OS X 10.5 to 10.7.

These instructions are for the versions of Apple Mail included with Mac OS X 10.5 through 10.7. Scroll down for instructions for older versions. To get started, open Apple Mail.

Mac OS X Lion (10.7) and Snow Leopard (10.6)

  1. In the "Welcome to Mail" window, fill in the appropriate data as requested. Your email address is your cnetid@uchicago.edu, and your password is your CNetID password. Click Continue.

  2. Mail will attempt to find your xMail account and then connect to it. It will display your "Account Summary" when it succeeds. Click Create.

  3. Your inbox displays.

Mac OS X Leopard (10.5)

  1. In the "Welcome to Mail" window, fill in the appropriate data as requested. Your email address is your cnetid@uchicago.edu, and your password is your CNetID password. Click Continue.

  2. Fill out the Incoming Mail Server window as follows:
    • Account Type: Exchange
    • Incoming Mail Server: xmail.uchicago.edu
    • User Name: Your CNet ID
    • Password: Your CNet password
    • Outlook Web Access Server: outlook.uchicago.edu

  3. Fill out the Outgoing Mail Server window as follows:
    • Outgoing Mail Server: authsmtp.uchicago.edu
    • Check Use Authentication
    • User Name:Your CNetID
    • Password: Your CNet password

  4. If you see a message saying Mail can't verify the authenticity of "authsmtp.uchicago.edu", click Connect.
  5. Mail then displays your Account Summary. Leave Take account online checked and click Create.
