Outlook 2010 - Edit a Contact in a Contact Group (formerly Distribution Lists)

This article explains how to edit a contact's information in Outlook 2010 from a Contact Group listing.


A contact group (formerly known as a distribution list) is a grouping of email addresses collected under one name.

Editing a Contact Who Has an Address Book Entry

  1. From the contact group listing, double-click on the member's name or email address.
  2. If the contact was added to the Contact Group by an address book, the entry can be edited.
    1. Outlook may open directly to the full contact card where you can edit the email address, then click Save and Close to return to the contact group listing.

    2. For entries added manually to your address book, Outlook displays a smaller card with an Open Contact link in the lower right corner. Click the link to display the full contact card.

    3. Edit desired fields, then click Save and Close to return to the contact group listing.

  3. Select Update Now in the Members section of the Contact Group. Any changes made to the email addresses will reflect on the group listing.

  4. Click Save & Close to return to contacts list.

Editing a Contact Who Does Not Have an Address Book Entry

  1. From the contact group listing, double-click on the member's name or email address.
  2. Outlook displays a small card that does NOT have the Open Contact link in the lower right corner.

  3. To edit the email address of this contact, one of two options may be taken:
    • Option 1: Remove the Contact Group Member and add back to group with correct data.
    • Option 2: Add the contact to the address book to make the contact editable.

    Remove a Contact Group Member

    1. In the list of names, click the name that you want to remove.
    2. On the Contact Group tab, in the Members group, click Remove Member.

    Add contact to Address Book to Edit

    1. From the small contact card that does not have an Open Contact link, select Add to Outlook Contacts from the View More Options icon.

    2. Edit desired fields, then click Save and Close to return to the contact group listing.
