Site Licensed Software for Departments
This article describes centrally site licensed software available to departments.
The University has license agreements with a number of vendors which are aimed at departments, rather than researchers or students. These arrangements are usually of greatest benefit to IT departments on campus who need to centrally manage clusters of servers or desktop computers, but may also be of use to research groups large enough to have their own IT shops. Licenses include:
- Symantec Tools for IT Administrators
- Microsoft Campus Agreement/Select
- Shavlik NetCheck Protect
- Oracle Database
In the interests of maintaining virus-free computers around campus, IT Services maintains a central license for Symantec Endpoint Protection. This is available as a free download to all current students, staff, and faculty of the University.
Additionally, the license also includes tools for IT administrators. This allows IT departments who centrally manage their desktops or servers to monitor Endpoint installations in their domain, and ensure that their virus definitions are up to date and all settings are correct.
The University subsidizes a central license for the most commonly-used Microsoft desktop applications, including Office Professional, Windows Upgrade, and Visual Studio. For details and how to purchase please email: email@example.com
Please note: For the purposes of virtual machines, Mac OS X currently counts as an "upgradable operating system" under the terms of the Campus Agreement. A computer which is purchased with no operating system, or with Linux pre-installed, does NOT qualify for a Windows upgrade.
The Campus Agreement also covers the Core CAL, which provides Client Access Licenses for Windows Server, Exchange Server, Systems Management Server and SharePoint Portal Server. Additionally, the Campus Computer Stores maintains a Microsoft Select Agreement; departments can purchase licenses for Visio, Project, Windows Server, SQL Server, and other Microsoft products under Select. For details and how to purchase please email: firstname.lastname@example.org
In order to help Windows users on campus better manage Microsoft's frequent (and often urgent) software updates, IT Services has subsidized a site license for Shavlik's NetCheck Protect patch management product. IT Services will be underwriting the per-seat client costs for University-owned computers on campus which are identified at the time maintenance is paid. Departmental support organizations wishing to run their own NetCheck Protect consoles may join, but must pay the cost of adding a console; they must also pay for the costs of adding their seats if they do so during the license term.

The University is currently maintaining a central license for Oracle Database on every OS it;s available on (including Windows, Solaris, Linux, and others). For information on joining this license, contact Mike Schmitt at email@example.com. Note that our arrangement does not include any kind of support beyond access to Oracle's internal forums.
