How do I create a new website?

To request a new static website for a University department or organization, send a request to webadmin@lists.uchicago.edu detailing the following:

  • The name of your department or organization to be used as Site Owner.
  • A desired .uchicago.edu hostname, ie, itservices.uchicago.edu
  • A list of CNetIDs who will be responsible for maintaining the website content to be used as Site Maintainers.

All new website creation requests are subject to approval.

How do I create a new Recognized Student Organization (RSO) website?

Recognized Student Organization (RSO) website requests must be sent to the RSO Resource Coordinator orcsa-help@lists.uchicago.edu.

All new website creation requests are subject to approval. RSO websites are static-only; no PHP/CGI is permitted.

How do I create a new personal home.uchicago.edu website?

To request a new personal home.uchicago.edu website, follow the instructions at setting up your home.uchicago.edu pages. You will be instructed to fill out an instatement request form. Requests are processed in approximately one business day.

How do I request site maintainer access to a website?

For Recognized Student Organization (RSO) websites, send site maintainer requests to the RSO Resource Coordinator orcsa-help@lists.uchicago.edu.

For Web Services-developed websites, send site maintainer requests to Web Services.

For all other websites, have the site owner send site maintainer requests to webadmin@lists.uchicago.edu. Typically, the site owner for a website is a department head or manager responsible for the website.

All site maintainers are required to fill out the IT Services Public Web Server Usage and Access form prior to account activation. Submissions are processed and reviewed in approximately one business day.

How do I edit and upload my web content?

You may use whichever editor suits your needs. To upload your web content, connect via SFTP to webspace.uchicago.edu using your CNetID and password.

How do I create a dynamic PHP website?

We offer a shared PHP environment suitable for hosting popular Open Source packages such as Drupal and WordPress. Learn more about dynamic web hosting options at our web hosting section. (RSO Web sites are static-only; no PHP/CGI is permitted.)

How do I use .htaccess files?

The use of .htaccess files is prohibited on the central University Web server. All Apache configuration is controlled centrally by Web Systems Administration. Submit a request to webadmin@lists.uchicago.edu detailing configuration changes you would like us to make.

How do I use Server-Side Includes (SSI)?

Server-Side Includes (SSI) are disabled by default. Submit a request to enable SSI to webadmin@lists.uchicago.edu.

How do I protect my web content with a username/password?

Simple username/password authentication is allowed for all websites. Submit a request to webadmin@lists.uchicago.edu containing the URLs you would like to protect and the username/password combination you would like to use. Note that CNetIDs are strictly forbidden using this model.

How do I protect my web content with CNetID authentication (LDAP)?

CNetID authentication (LDAP) is allowed for websites which employ SSL Secure Certificates. Submit a request to webadmin@lists.uchicago.edu containing the URLs you would like to protect with CNetID authentication (LDAP).

How do I protect my web content with Shibboleth Single Sign-on?

Shibboleth support is available upon request. Submit a request to webadmin@lists.uchicago.edu detailing the website you would like to protect using Shibboleth Single Sign-on.

How do I restrict my web content using Grouper groups?

Grouper support is available upon request. Submit a request to webadmin@lists.uchicago.edu detailing the website you would like to protect using Grouper groups.

How do I IP-restrict my web content?

Submit a request to webadmin@lists.uchicago.edu containing the URLs you would like to restrict to which IPs.

How do I use robots.txt files?

By placing a robots.txt file at the root level of your website, you have some degree of control over what search engine crawlers (Google, Yahoo!, etc.) will index. Visit the Web Robots site for more information about robots.txt files.

How do I archive my web content?

Submit a request to webadmin@lists.uchicago.edu detailing the website you would like archived. Archives are stored for 3 years and may be retrieved upon request.

How do I retire my website?

Submit a request to webadmin@lists.uchicago.edu detailing the website you would like retired.

How do I retire my personal home.uchicago.edu website?

To retire and delete your personal home.uchicago.edu website, submit a removal request form. Requests are processed in approximately one business day.

How do I obtain web traffic statistics for my website?

We provide detailed web traffic statistics at Webtraffic for all of our hosted websites.

How do I secure my website using SSL Secure Certificates?

If we host your site, let us know and we'll set it up. If you host your own site, please visit Digital Certificate - Overview of Available Digital Certificates for more information.

What happens if my website becomes compromised?

In the event that a website's security becomes compromised, the affected site will be taken offline immediately. We will document the incident and notify our management team. We will then notify site owners and site maintainers of the incident via email and/or phone. The compromised website will remain offline until the site owner/site maintainers have provided an explanation of the incident stating that the security vulnerabilities have been repaired.

What happens if my website is negatively impacting other websites?

In the event that a Web site is severely malfunctioning to the point where it is negatively impacting other websites or resources on campus, the malfunctioning website will be taken offline immediately. We will document the incident and notify our management team. We will then notify site owners and site maintainers of the incident via email and/or phone. The malfunctioning website will remain offline until the site owner/site maintainers have provided an explanation of the incident stating that the malfunctions affecting other websites/resources have been repaired.
