02/05/09

DCS’ Mainframe Systems Group installed a new SSL Certificate in the UCHIBETA LPAR on Thursday, 2/5/09. The SSL Certificate, last updated in Production in May, 2006, protects TN3270 and FTP traffic on the Mainframe. The current Certificate will expire on Saturday, 2/14/09. UCHIBETA TN3270 sessions via Hummingbird will automatically accept the new SSL Certificate, starting Thursday, 2/5. FTP is not enabled in UCHIBETA.

02/10/09

Data Center Services’ Mainframe Systems Group installed a new SSL Certificate in the UCHIMVS1 (Production) LPAR on Thursday, 2/10/09, during System Test Time. The new SSL Certificate has been active in the UCHIBETA LPAR since Thursday, 2/5/09. DCS installed a new SSL Certificate in the UCHIMVS1 (Production) LPAR on Tuesday, 2/10/09. The SSL Certificate protects TN3270 and FTP traffic on the Mainframe. UCHIMVS1 TN3270 sessions via Hummingbird will automatically accept the new SSL Certificate starting on Tuesday, 2/10. However, FTP sessions in Production will prompt users to accept the new SSL Certificate starting on Tuesday, 2/10. Mainframe FTP Users will see a minor difference in their connection routine. When launching Mainframe Ipswitch FTP, you will be presented with a dialog box titled “Non-Trusted Certificate”. This box contains certificate attribute information and has three radio buttons to select from: “Allow this connection only”; “Trust this certificate”; and “Do not allow this connection”. Selecting “Trust this certificate” means you will not see this dialog box again until the next certificate renewal. For those who always select “Allow this connection only”, the only difference you will see will be updated attributes in the Certificate Information field.

05/27/09

During System Test Time on Wednesday, 5/27/09, we resized MVS’ Page Datasets in Production to alleviate some of the recent problems we have experienced with Auxiliary Storage shortages. Unfortunately, an additional problem with the “C” Catalog delayed availability of UCHIMVS1 and its online databeses until 9:05 AM. Any datsets cataloged to the “C” Catalog between 6:30 and 8:40 AM on Wednesday, 5/27, were lost.

05/31/09

During System Test Time on Sunday, 5/31/09, we applied routine Maintenance to the Bus-Tech Virtual Tape Appliance. This Maintenance had been tested on the Mainframe System Group’s TEST LPAR. Test Time delayed availability of the UCHIBETA LPAR until 9:00 AM on Sunday, 5/31/09.

09/13/09

During System Test Time on Sunday, 9/13/09, we installed z/OS 1.10 in Production. The IBM z9 Mainframe was available for use under z/OS 1.10 by 10:30 AM. z/OS 1.10 had been available for Open Testing in the UCHIBETA LPAR on weekdays since Thursday, 7/16/09. We also installed MVS/Quickref 7.0, DASD Pooling/Budgeting software 5.1, and ACF2 12.2 in Production, all of which had been available in UCHIBETA with z/OS 1.10. The UCHIBETA LPAR was not available on Sunday, 9/13/09. Open Testing in BETA resumed on Monday, 9/14/09.

Under z/OS 1.10, there is a change in Control Area (CA) size selection for all new allocations of VSAM datasets on any Mainframe DASD Volume. z/OS 1.10 will select a CA size of 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, or 15 tracks based on the primary and secondary space allocations requested. Because a wider variety of CA sizes was previously possible, z/OS 1.10 might select a CA size which is different from what a prior OS Release selected based on the same primary and secondary space allocation. (As in the past, you cannot explicitly specify CA size.) For example, a request for “TRK” in z/OS 1.10 will result in a CA of 5 tracks with primary and secondary amounts of 25 and 5 tracks for the requested VSAM dataset. If you have any programs that depend upon a specific CA size which is no longer supported, you should change the programs to accept CA sizes of 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, or 15 tracks. In addition, attempting an FDR restore of a VSAM dataset that was NOT originally allocated with CA size of 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, or 15 tracks can result in error message FDR157 and a restore failure. Use the NEWI parameter when doing such a restore to avoid that failure. Existing VSAM datasets will not be affected by the upgrade to z/OS 1.10, only new allocations and restores.

09/22/09

During System Test Time on Tuesday, 9/22/09, we added a new file system to Virtual Tape to increase the number of available VT volumes.

09/29/09

Effective Tuesday, 9/29/09, the use of /*SETUP cards is not allowed in Mainframe JCL. /*SETUP cards had been used to place jobs requiring tapemounts in the HOLD queue. Operations Staff could then locate the tapes needed for the job before releasing it into Execution. Since we introduced Virtual Tape and eliminated 3480 drives and cartridges, the need for /*SETUP has disappeared. ProdShop has eliminated all /*SETUP cards from jobs in Production Libraries. If you have jobs in your private libraries which still contain /*SETUP cards, those lines of JCL must be deleted before you submit your job. Jobs submitted with /*SETUP cards will be automatically cancelled by JES with no explanation appearing in the Message File. If you had been using a /*SETUP card to communicate information about your job to Operations Staff, you can still use /*MESSAGE cards for that purpose. Please be aware, however, that /*MESSAGE does not put a job in the HOLD Queue and that the messages to the Operator will scroll off their consoles.

On Tuesday, 11/03/09, DCS’ Mainframe Systems group installed a fix to Syncsort in the UCHIBETA LPAR to correct the following condition: “EW6788 – Records may be incorrectly included or omitted in an application with variable-length records, INCLUDE/OMIT with a substring comparison and VLTESTI=2 specified. In order for the error to occur, the INCLUDE/OMIT condition must contain a substring comparison that is ANDed to a non-substring comparison and the substring comparison’s field length must be greater than the length of the constant.” The Syncsort-supplied fix has been tested in the Mainframe Group’s TEST LPAR and will spend two weeks in BETA for Open Testing before Production application.
