Student Phone - User Guide - Using the Phone

This article describes how to use the telephones in student residence hall rooms.

Each student has the option to opt-in to have a room phone that allows to and from campus, local, and domestic long-distance numbers at no cost.  This gives the students access to emergency and campus services, as well as friends and family without drawing minutes on their cellular plans.  Included with basic phone service are features such as call waiting, abbreviated dialing and three-way calling.  To get a phone for your room, contact your resident hall master.

Basic Calling Instructions

Internal (on-campus) calls
For 702, 753, 834, 795 and 926 prefixes:

  • Enter last 5 digits (2-xxxx, 3-xxxx, 4-xxxx, 5-xxxx, 6-xxxx)

Local calls and Domestic Long-distance calls
To place a call, enter:

  • 9 + 1 + Area Code + phone number.

To redial your last off-campus call from a PBX phone, enter:

  • # + 9

Using Calling Cards

To make a direct-dial calling card call from a University phone:

Local/domestic long-distance calls
To place a call, enter:

  • 9 and wait for dial tone
  • Enter carrier’s toll free number
  • Follow prompts

International calls
Calling cards must be used to place international calls.

To place a call, enter:

  • 9 and wait for dial tone
  • Enter carrier’s toll free number
  • follow instructions on the back of the card. (International calls usually include dialing 011 + country code + city code + phone number regardless of chosen carrier)

Directory Assistance

To obtain a campus telephone number:

  • From on campus, enter 2-1234 for the University or 2-1000 for the Hospitals
  • From off-campus, enter (773) 702-1234 for the University or (773) 702-1000 for the Hospitals

To obtain a local or long-distance telephone number:

  • Enter 9 + 411

Call Forward All

Forward all calls from your room phone to any other phone on or off-campus.

  • Press "more" softkey, then press "CfwdAll" softkey
  • After the beep, enter 5 digit number for campus calls
  • For off-campus call forwarding, enter 9 + 1 + the designated 10-digit number
  • To deactivate, Press "more" softkey, then press "CfwdAll" softkey

Caller ID

Available for both inbound and outbound calls on phones located in the House System Residence Halls.

  • Outbound calls will provide the name “University of Chicago” and the phone number associated with the room phone.
  • You can opt to place a permanent block that will send the default University number, 773-702-1221 on -call calls. To place a permanent block, send a request to


Call Waiting
lets you know that someone else is trying to reach you when you’re already talking on the phone. You have the option to ignore the new call or to put your first call on hold while answering the incoming call.

When you hear a call waiting tone:

  • Press the "Answer" softkey or press iDivert to send call to voicemail if you have a voicemail box.
  • Hand up handset or hold Press lit red button to return to original call.
  • Hang up handset or hold down “hang up” button
  • Phone rings for second call.

Three Way Calling allows you to communicate with two other parties at once, so that all three of you can hold a conversation (helpful for setting up schedules or meetings).

  • Call first party
  • Press the "more" softkey, then press the "Confrn" softkey
  • Enter second number (five digits internal or 9-1-area code-number for external party)
  • Press the "Confrn" softkey to join all parties together.
