07/15/02

On Monday, 7/15/02, we implemented two changes to tape processing in the UCHIBETA LPAR. First is an update to a local exit to protect the RMM database should an unlabeled cartridge be mounted in response to a request for an RMM controlled Scratch cartridge. (Manual safeguards have been in place since this problem was first discovered in March, 2002.) The second change corrects a recently discovered JCL logic error which allows processing of invalid /*SETUP cards for Over-The-Counter (OTC) volumes. CSM has tested both of these changes during exclusive testing on the UCHIBETA LPAR. Following two weeks in BETA, these changes will be installed in the Production (UCHIMVS1) LPAR on Monday, 7/29.

07/17/02

We performed an IPL of the UCHIMVS1 (Production) LPAR on Monday, 9/16/02, at 6:00 AM.

09/18/02

On Wednesday, 9/18/02, we made the ESP External Security Interface the default in the UCHIBETA LPAR. Currently in Production (UCHIMVS1), ESP uses its own internal security model: If you want to use ESP we have to define you to the product independently of ACF2; Access to ESP objects is usually controlled by the “owner” of the event (usually the last person who edited the event). The ESP External Security interface in UCHIBETA now uses ACF2 Resource Rules to control access to ESP objects such as Events, Calendars, Symbol Libraries, Resources, Applications, etc. Anyone known to ACF2 will be able to use ESP under their own LogonID in BETA. Access to ESP objects as well as datasets will be controlled by the Event prefix. Example: Under ESP Internal Security (still in effect in the UCHIMVS1 LPAR), Event XPS.TRY_THIS owned by XPSJIML runs under XPSJIML authority. Under External Security in the UCHIBETA LPAR as of 9/18/02, this Event runs under XPS authority. Please send questions and feedback to Jim Lichtenstein. NOTE: On Tuesday, 6/03/03, we attempted to make ESP External Security the Production default. Despite extended testing in the UCHIBETA LPAR, we encountered a problem using ESP external security in the UCHIMVS1 (Production) LPAR. On Wednesday, 6/04/03, ESP External Security was removed as the Production default in the UCHIMVS1 LPAR. On Thursday, 6/05/03, ESP External Security was removed as the default on the UCHIBETA LPAR. We have switched back to internal security in both Mainframe LPARs while we analyze the problem. UPDATE: The problem encountered on Tuesday, 6/3, was with an incorrectly set parm which has now been reset. ESP External Security was activated in the UCHIBETA LPAR on Tuesday, 6/10/03 and became the Production default on Monday, 6/16/03.

09/23/02

10/09/02

We experienced a failure of IP PrintWay while trying to print remotely to UHRM. Thsi failure also affected our ability to print to Mott. An IPL was scheduled for the morning of Thursday, 10/10/02, to attempt to recover remote printing ability.

10/10/02

Following this morning’s IPL of the UCHIMVS1 LPAR, we were able to direct jobs to print remotely at Mott. However, an alert Operator noticed an unfamiliar PrintWay message on a console in the Computer Room and brought it to our System Group’s attention. This message was the result of our testing a “response notification” exit. With the exit in place, we requested a retry of the UHRM job which appeared to have “caused” yesterday’s failure. This attempt resulted in another failure of IP PrintWay. We then removed the response notification exit, restarted PrintWay, and successfully printed the UHRM job remotely. Systems Group will be investigating the exit. In the meantime, remote printing from the Mainframe is enabled.

10/14/02

We performed an IPL of the Production (UCHIMVS1) LPAR on Monday, 10/14/02, at 5:00 AM.

10/14/02

On Monday, 10/14/02, we made Version 3.0.2 of the VSAM enhancer VSAM I/O PLUS the default in the UCHIBETA LPAR. Please take this opportunity to test the new VSAM I/O PLUS before it becomes Production. (The current Production version is 2.2.3.)

VSAM I/O Plus has been renamed to Performance Essential in version 3.0.2. Performance Essential 3.0.2 helps to optimize buffer allocations for VSAM data sets automatically without any programmer involvement. It significantly reduces EXCP counts, which frees channel and CPU resources for other tasks. This release of Performance Essential has enhanced performance for VSAM sequential processing.

If you encounter problems while testing Performance Essential 3.0.2 please contact helen seren and Todd Last. If all goes well with testing, we will install Performance Essential 3.0.2 in Production (UCHIMVS1 LPAR) on Sunday, 10/27/02.
