This article lists the upgrades to the 2001 OS/390 mainframe.

Jan, 2001

During the month of January, 2001, Central Servers and Mainframes’ Systems Group had exclusive use of the UCHIBETA LPAR for OS390 2.8 testing on the following days:

Wednesday 01/03/01
Friday 01/05/01
Tuesday 01/09/01
Thursday 01/11/01
Tuesday 01/16/01
Thursday 01/18/01
Tuesday 01/23/01
Thursday 01/25/01
Tuesday 01/30/01

01/07/01

We used scheduled System Test Time on the IBM OS390 Mainframe (both the UCHIMVS1 and UCHIBETA LPARs) on Sunday, 01/07/01, from 7:00 until 10:00 AM to prepare for future OS390 2.8 Open Testing periods on the UCHIBETA LPAR. The UCHIBETA LPAR (with the current OS390 2.5) was available on Sunday, 1/7, from 10:00 AM until 4:00 PM. 01/17/01 We brought the Mainframe Removable Media Manager (RMM) down on Wednesday, 1/17, from Noon to 1:00 PM. No jobs using RMM-controlled cartridges were run during that period. ISPF RMM Panels were not available. We renamed and relocated the RMM Database and Journal datasets as part of an ongoing project to standardize our System files.

01/21/01

During scheduled System Test Time on the IBM OS390 Mainframe on Sunday, 1/21/01, we prepared for testing new pooling and budgeting software for OS390 2.8 on UCHIBETA.

01/28/01 We scheduled System Test Time on the IBM OS390 Mainframe on Sunday, 1/28/01, from 6:00 until 8:00 AM. The UCHIBETA LPAR was available on its normal schedule of 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM on Sunday, 1.28.

Feb, 2001

During the month of February, 2001, Central Servers and Mainframes’ Systems Group had exclusive use of the UCHIBETA LPAR for OS390 2.8 testing on the following days:
Thursday 02/01/01
Tuesday 02/06/01
Thursday 02/08/01
Tuesday 02/13/01
Thursday 02/15/01
Tuesday 02/20/01
02/16/01

We needed to IPL the IBM Mainframe around Noon Friday, 2/16/01, when the page dataset which contains PLPA became full. PLPA stands for Pageable Link Pack Area which contains, among other items, copies of often-used programs pre-loaded into memory at IPL time. We then defined a new, larger dataset for the PLPA. We also added one to the “total possible page datasets” count. These changes will take effect at the next IPL, now scheduled for Sunday, 2/18.

However, the Noon IPL on Friday, 2/16, introduced a change in an ACF2 field which negated our DASD Pooling rules resulting in datasets being directed to the “wrong” disk packs and in departments exceeding their budgets. Some of that night’s scheduled Production was delayed while the problem was analyzed and solved. The Mainframe was IPLed at about 2:00 AM on Saturday, 2/17, and processing was resumed.

02/17/01

Delays in scheduled Production caused by problems with the Mainframe System prevented our running the jobs which support the daily refresh of the UCHIBETA LPAR on Saturday morning, 2/17. Therefore, the UCHIBETA LPAR was not available on Saturday, 2/17.

02/18/01

During scheduled Hardware Test Time on the IBM Mainframe Sunday, 2/18/01, we installed an upgrade to the microcode on the IBM ESS Disk. We also installed FlashCopy, the new software we will use for copying the Production disk farm under OS390 2.8. Once we have installed OS390 2.8 as the Production Operating System, our use of FlashCopy will greatly reduce the amount of time we now dedicate to copying the Production disks for the daily refresh of the UCHIBETA LPAR. The UCHIBETA LPAR was not available on Sunday, 2/18/01.

02/21/01

There was insufficient time to run the copy jobs which prepare UCHIBETA DASD Wednesday morning, 2/21/01. UCHIBETA was not available Wednesday, 2/21/01.
02/22/01 Systems Group cancelled their exclusive use of the UCHIBETA LPAR on Thursday, 02/22/01. UCHIBETA was available for Open Testing on that day.

02/23/01

We scheduled System Test Time Friday, 2/23/01, from 6:30 to 7:30 AM. UCHIBETA was available from 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM Fri, 2/23.
March, 01 During the month of March, 2001, Central Servers and Mainframes’ Systems Group had exclusive use of the UCHIBETA LPAR for OS390 2.8 testing on the following days:
Thursday 03/08/01
Monday 03/12/01
Tuesday 03/13/01

03/14/01

Effective Wednesday, 3/14, the default Operating System for Open Testing on the UCHIBETA LPAR was OS390 2.8 (unless OS390 2.5 was requested).

03/29/01

One DP96 Printer and one impact printer were available on the UCHIBETA LPAR on Thursday, 3/29/01.

04/02/01

On Monday, 04/02/01, UCHIBETA was available for Open Testing of OS/390 2.8 from 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM but without DBCOAS or DBFS2 running and without printing services.

04/04/01

One Xerox DP96 Printer and one impact printer will be available on the UCHIBETA LPAR Wednesday, 4/4. (We will make every effort to have these devices allocated to UCHIBETA for the entire OS/390 2.8 Open Testing period but in the case of hardware problems, Production demands must take priority.)

Please NOTE that once a printer is allocated to UCHIBETA, all jobs eligible to print on that device will be printed. If you do not wish to have the output from a particular job print, please set that job to a non-print MSGCLASS.

04/18/01

Mail server running in the UCHIBETA LPAR to allow testing of processes which send mail.

04/22/01

OS/390 2.8 was not installed into production during morning test time. OS/390 2.5 is still the Production Operating System. The UCHIBETA LPAR was not available.

04/23/01

The UCHIBETA LPAR will not be available on Monday, 4/23.

04/26/01

During that time, the IBM Mainframe was running unattended: ISPF/TSO was available; all scheduled online regions were up; the UCHIBETA LPAR was available until 6:00 PM; jobs not requiring Operator intervention were run in both UCHIMVS1 and UCHIBETA LPARs; but no output was printed at the 1155 E 60th Street Computer Room until after 6:00 PM.

06/21/01

Systems installed Version 7.0 of the bebugging aid XPEDITER on the IBM OS390 Mainframe during Test Time 6:00 AM to 7:30 AM.

06/21/01

A successful emergency IPL of the Mainframe was performed at 12:00 noon. When the Mainframe was IPLed following Test Time this morning (see above) an incorrect response was made to a system prompt early in the procedure. The result was that UCHIMVS1 began operating with system parameters which are used in the TEST LPAR (NOTE: this is not UCHIBETA).

We believe that this error only affected our own internal processes.

07/01/01

Hardware upgrade of the ESS Disk Array from E20s to F20s for improved performance took place during Test Time from 4:00 AM until 12:00 Noon.

07/01/01
