UChicago Wikis - Permissions

This article explains the management of user permissions for UChicago Wikis.

How do I set access to wiki page and spaces?

You can restrict user access to individual pages, but you cannot grant permissions at the page level. Permissions to a page are inherited from that page's space, and it is at the space level that all group and individual access is determined. Restrictions on pages are inherited by all of its children.

How do I set up permissions for wiki spaces?

  1. Select Space Admin from the Browse drop-down menu in the upper right hand of the toolbar.
  2. From the navigation on the left of the Space Admin page, select Security > Permissions. If you aren't already in a Secure Administrator Session at this point you will be asked to authenticate with your CNetID and CNet Password or with your UChicago Wikis Login for temporary Administrator Access.
  3. Once authenticated, you will be at the View Space Permissions page. On this page, you may make modifications to the permissions granted to Groups, Individual Users, and Anonymous users by clicking on one of the Edit Permissions buttons.
  4. To add individual or group permissions to the space, you may click the magnifying glasssrch_16.gif search icon to open up a search page, but you will probably find the text box in-line completion feature will yield better results.

How do I restrict wiki pages?

Page permissions are inherited from spaces. Additional restrictions can be added at the page level in one of two ways.

  1. When creating or editing a page, click on the Restrictions:Edit link at the bottom of the page (below the text entry area) to bring up the box for editing its view and edit restrictions; OR
  2. When viewing the page, select Restrictions under the Tools menu to popup a Page Restrictions box.

In order to set or modify page permissions, a user needs to have "Restrict Pages" permissions in the space to which the page belongs, and sufficient permissions to edit the page itself. If a user is restricted from editing a page through page permissions, they are also restricted from changing the permissions themselves. So, if you do not see the "Restrict" option at the bottom of the page or in the Tools, you do not have the permission.

The restrictions on a parent page will be inherited by all of the pages under it, and you can manage page access by moving pages around within a space.

How do I create groups of users?

If you have created a personal or group space, you are able to create a group of users for whom you can specify access rules.

  1. Select Space Admin from the Browse drop-down menu in the upper right hand of the toolbar.
  2. From the the toolbar at the top of the Space Admin page, select Manage Users/Groups. If you aren't already in a Secure Administrator Session at this point you will be asked to authenticate with your CNetID and CNet Password or with your UChicago Wikis Login for temporary Administrator Access.
  3. Once authenticated, you will be at the Custom Space User Management page. On this page, you may create, modify, or delete user groups by following the page prompts. Existing groups in the space, if there are any, will be listed at the top of the left hand column.

In addition to the groups you create, there are two user groups built in: Anonymous users refers to all wiki visitors who are not logged in. The group "confluence-users" consists of every user with a UChicago Wikis account.
